Throughout the years, I have noticed that in our community, there seem to be few outpatient practices that specialize in working with clients who are struggling with psychosis and other serious mental health concerns. My hope by creating Canvas of Possibilities was to help provide this very needed specialized service to our community members. I wanted clients to experience that when they come here, they are working with clinicians who are knowledgeable, highly skilled, and passionate about what they do. I wanted clients to feel understood, seen, supported, and safe - to feel that this is a place that can help them find healing. -Dr. Kholodova
Serious and persistent mental health diagnoses may include schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and chronic PTSD. All of these conditions may also include self harm, thoughts of death, and suicide attempts.
At our center, we carefully take time to understand our clients’ unique experiences, struggles, clinical presentations, and strengths to develop individualized and comprehensive treatment plans. All of our clinicians are trained in conducting thorough and client-centered risk assessments and interventions. We work together with our clients and the members of their support system to develop detailed and comprehensive safety plans. We also coordinate care with the clients’ psychiatrists and other medical providers.
The modalities that we integrate in treatment include, but are not limited to, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and relational psychodynamic methods. We also work to connect with the clients’ creativity and build affect regulation capacity by engaging them in creative projects.
We support our clients in finding meaningful social activities and hobbies, as well as volunteer, school, or employment opportunities that will help to create structure and predictability in their routine, create connections with others, and foster more meaning and fulfillment in their lives. We make every effort to involve the clients’ support system in their treatment, and offer individual, couples, and family therapy.
We offer individual, couples, and family therapy services to clients who are over 18 years old. Our treatment approach is tailored to the unique needs of each person. We integrate insight-oriented and skills-based psychotherapy models that may include relational psychodynamic psychotherapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).
Areas of treatment focus:
The terms dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders mean that an individual who struggles with substance use also struggles with another mental health condition. There are many individuals who live with a mental health difficulty who do not meet criteria for a substance use diagnosis. However, many individuals who have difficulties with substance use also struggle with another mental health condition. We view problematic substance use as a maladaptive coping mechanism that individuals develop when they have limited means of managing painful experiences. Often, problematic substance use develops as a result of a traumatic experience, painful loss, or a difficult life transition.
Our approach to treatment is trauma-informed, client-centered, and strength-based. We address the root of the issue, and not just the symptom - helping to heal the clients’ traumatic wounds and building a meaningful relationship with themselves and the world. We work with individuals to develop a treatment plan that feels authentic and workable for them. A treatment plan may include harm reduction or relapse-prevention, risk management, CBT/DBT/ACT coping skills building, and trauma treatment via contemporary psychodynamic methods and EMDR.
